Do you remember the girl happily linked arms with Bob Dylan on the cover of his album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan? That's Suze Rotolo, his first great love. They lived together in Greenwich Village, the New York district that was the epicentre of the folk movement back then and the environment in which Dylan developed from an obscure country singer into the voice of a new generation. It wasn't until 2005 that Rotolo first spoke publicly about their relationship in No Direction Home by Martin Scorsese. The same Scorsese encouraged her to write A Freewheelin' Time. A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties. Luckily the book is not just about Dylan - it also captures a colourful image of the time and reports beautifully on her own growing up.
